Roštaš Rikardo

Greetings to everyone. My name is Roštaš Rikardo, and I was born, rather uniquely, on December 29th, 1968, in the city of Mitrovica, Kosovo. My birth was a solitary one, a detail that, in a way, has always shaped my understanding of connection and belonging in the world. I currently find myself navigating the complexities of life as an eighth-grade student, also here in Mitrovica, Kosovo. While for many, eighth grade might simply mark another year in their academic journey, for me it feels a crucial juncture. It’s a time to explore my interests, solidify my understanding of the world, and begin to think about the paths that might lie ahead.

Mitrovica, my hometown, is more than just a place on a map. It's a vibrant tapestry of experiences, friendships, and cultural nuances that have deeply influenced who I am. The streets I walk, the buildings that surround me, and the people I encounter all contribute to the rich fabric of my everyday life. The city's history, a blend of different influences, is a constant reminder of the passage of time and the complex forces that shape a community. It is a place of both familiarity and, at times, surprising discoveries.

My school, a place of learning and growth, is where I spend the majority of my weekdays. It is within those walls that I encounter a variety of subjects, each offering a unique perspective on the universe. From the intricacies of mathematics to the power of literature, I am constantly challenged to expand my knowledge and develop my critical thinking skills. The classroom is not merely a space for academic pursuits; it’s also where I engage in lively discussions with my peers, learn from our shared experiences, and form lasting friendships.

Redzep Avduli

My name is Redžep Avduli, and I was born in 1967, a solitary arrival into the world in the city of Mitrovica, Kosovo. This place, once a part of Yugoslavia, holds a significant piece of my identity and the roots from which my life's work has sprung. While my birth was a singular event, my life has become a testament to the power of community, particularly for the Roma and Sinti people. Today, I stand before you as the president of the Roma und Sinti Union Stuttgart, a position that not only represents a culmination of my personal journey but also reflects my deep commitment to advocating for the rights, well-being, and recognition of the Roma and Sinti populations.

The memory of my early years in Mitrovica is etched with both the vibrancy of our culture and the quiet struggles that often accompany minority communities. Growing up, I became acutely aware of the disparities and injustices that Roma and Sinti people faced, experiences that have fueled my passion for social justice. This direct exposure to challenges, ranging from societal prejudice to systemic discrimination, shaped my understanding of the need for dedicated advocacy and organization. These were not merely abstract concepts; they were the daily realities of my community, driving me to seek ways to create positive change.

My path has led me, through various circumstances, to Stuttgart, Germany, a city that now serves as the hub of my activism. The transition was a significant one, demanding adaptation to a new cultural landscape and presenting a different set of challenges. However, it was in Stuttgart that the Roma und Sinti Union blossomed, becoming a powerful voice for our people within the region. Under my leadership as president, the organization is deeply engaged with a wide variety of endeavors. Our primary focus is on fostering a sense of unity and mutual support among the Roma and Sinti communities in Stuttgart and the surrounding areas.

The work we do is multifaceted, tailored to address both immediate needs and the long-term goals of our community. We provide support and resources through a range of programs. We work tirelessly on initiatives aimed at promoting education, from bridging the gap in schooling access to advocating for culturally sensitive curricula within schools. We also believe that strengthening economic independence is crucial to the well-being of the community. Employment opportunities are often limited, and our union strives to break down barriers to fair employment and help enhance skills to access jobs. We know that good health is essential and so we work to improve access to healthcare services and address health disparities.

Beyond these fundamental elements of our work, we focus on preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Roma and Sinti people. This includes the celebration of our traditions, the support of our artists, and the protection of our historical narratives. We are dedicated to ensuring that our history, filled with resilience and creativity, is not forgotten or misrepresented. Through cultural events, workshops, and community gatherings, we strive to foster a space where the uniqueness of our culture is celebrated and valued
